Paracentesis

This simple procedure is done when a person has a lot of fluid in the abdominal cavity, usually from liver disease. To get a sample of the fluid, or to remove a large amount to help reduce discomfort, an area on the abdomen is cleaned and the skin is numbed. A special needle is then inserted into the abdominal cavity and the fluid is removed. This procedure causes about the same amount of discomfort as having your blood drawn. It is a very safe procedure.
