One method to treat large,
symptomatic hemorrhoids is to ligate them. This
involves placing a small rubber band over the hemorrhoid,
so sometimes this procedure is called hemorrhoidal banding.
After a few days, the banded hemorrhoid falls off
thereby stopping the bleeding. The procedure is
generally quick, and incurs little discomfort.
It is often done in conjunction with a
colonoscopy
or flexible sigmoidoscopy.
For selected patients with large bleeding hemorrhoids it can be very effective.
