Esophagogastroduodenoscopy

This procedure is what most people call an "upper scope". The procedure consists of a long flexible lighted tube, (a "scope") which is gently inserted through your mouth and passed down into your stomach. The diameter of the tube is about the size of an Advil tablet. Before the procedure you will have received some medication through an IV. This medication will have made you sleepy. It also gets rid of the gag reflex. This procedure is relatively short in duration and very safe. Inspection of the esophagus, stomach, and upper small bowel can be achieved in comfort. Biopsies may be taken.
