Esophageal Manometry

This simple procedure is done for the evaluation of difficult swallowing, or to evaluate the contractions of the esophagus prior to an endoscopic reflux procedure (Enteryx, EndoCinch) or antireflux surgery. It consists of a long, flexible tube which is carefully passed through your nose and down your esophagus. Prior to passing the tube, your nasal passage will have been coated with a medication to help reduce sensation. Once in place, you will be asked to swallow small sips of water. Your esophageal contractions can then be viewed on a computer screen. Measurements from this test help determine if your esophagus contracts normally or not. Although a little annoying, this procedure is easy to do and very tolerable.
