Esophageal Dilation

This procedure is performed when a person has the symptoms of trouble swallowing. Often, the reason for the difficulty swallowing is a narrowing of the esophagus. Dilation is usually done at the time of an esophagogastroduodenoscopy (EGD) . Dilation consists of passing long, tapered dilators down the esophagus. Usually a small one first, then sequentially larger ones are passed - one at a time. Dilation can also be done with special balloon catheters. These are passed right through the scope. It is a safe procedure when performed by a physician with much experience.
